Do acrylic aquariums always need full base support?
I have read in several places that the bigger acrylic aquariums need to be supported on the entire base, and not just along the edges like glass tanks.
I am planning to use a stand with center brace for a standard 48", 55 gallon acrylic aquarium. Is this a safe thing to do?

Yes they do -- the structure of the acrylic is such that it cannot withstand an uneven stress load. A seam will fail as a result. The reason why is that the seams are fairly rigid -- no flexing. When you look at a glass tank, obviously the walls are rigid, but the seams are flexible silicone, which helps transfer the stress.
In addition, glass tanks are designed to sit on the frame, which evenly balances the stress.
My suggestion for acrylic tanks is to use a large flat piece of styrofoam -- this compensates for any unevenness in the load of the tank/water, and the stand itself.
