what is the strongest wood that comes in 4x4x10?
I am building an aquarium stand, and i am wondering what the stongest 4x4 is that is readily available. The stand will be 10 feet long and 40 inches wide, and will support approx 5500 lbs. I have the design down and do not mind adding more support if necessary.

There is a readily available wood, but not many places carry it. It's called Iron Wood, AKA muscle wood. It's among the hardest and strongest of the hard woods. It's about 40-60% stronger than oak, but not as pretty. A good finish makes all the difference with this type of wood.

Or you can go for locust. It is also among the hardest and strongest of the hard woods, but it's NOT cheap.
I suspect there is no wooden beam of that dimension that will support 5500 pounds.

If you are going to be adding supports then the strength of the wood is not as important and you can use either yellow pine, oak or fir.
