i have never made a stand before because i got a stand with my tank. i would say metal is better but more expensive and wood is probably cheaper

hope this helped and good luck =)
A metal stand requires welding to make a solid stand. it is tricky to make a frame like an aquarium sand without some twisting, and even experienced welders can have problems making one for you.

I have built wooden stands for many years and the best design I've used is in this article I wrote a few years ago. The design can be adapted to any size tank, one level or two.
you can use a metal stand or wooden stand. I suggest you to use wooden stand coz it is cheaper than metal. Use a thick wood.
Why don't you look for old stands in bargain stores.

Sometimes you can get good deals .

I buy all new but for pet cages etc I can pick up good bargains at great prices
